Description:
This training will cover recent California family law and other cases directly affecting survivors of domestic violence and their children. The goal of the training is to equip attorneys and others working with survivors of domestic violence and their children with the latest tools and information to ensure the best outcome possible for their clients in family courts.

Presenter:

Nancy Lemon, Legal Director, Family Violence Appellate Project

Nancy K.D. Lemon received a BA Women’s Studies in 1975 from UC Santa Cruz and a JD from Boalt (Berkeley Law) in 1980. She started doing domestic violence work in 1979 and has focused on this area ever since. She has taught Domestic Violence Law at Boalt since 1988. Her textbook, Domestic Violence Law (4th edition, West, 2013) is the first published curriculum on this topic. She also directs the Domestic Violence Practicum, and with her students has written many amicus briefs. She co-taught Girls, Women and the Criminal Justice System in 2011. Ms. Lemon has represented numerous battered women obtaining restraining orders and advocated for them with the civil and criminal justice systems. She has worked as an expert witness in hundreds of civil, criminal and asylum cases, and has testified in 70 cases. She has worked on numerous pieces of legislation in the California legislature, including AB 2089, effective in 2015, which strengthens the Domestic Violence Prevention Act. She has published dozens of books and articles. She wrote domestic violence curricula for judges and court employees and a benchbook for California criminal court judges. She has trained hundreds of people on domestic violence dynamics and law. In 2012, Ms. Lemon co-founded the Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP), a non-profit agency, and serves as its Legal Director. This is the only statewide agency in the US focused on appealing family law cases involving domestic violence and child abuse. Through co-counseling with approximately 200 pro bono attorneys, FVAP appeals and defends custody and restraining order decisions. It also petitions for publication of key appellate cases, trains attorneys, advocates and judges, and produces the next generation of attorneys through supervising law student interns and recent graduates.
